Federal Tax Form Tip: PIN Or QMID Requirement
If your customers installed a geothermal system last year and is trying to claim the 30% federal tax credit, a common question we hear around tax time is whether a Product Identification Number (PIN) or QMID is required when filing. The short answer: no PIN is required for ground source heat pumps. Geothermal systems fall under the 25D (Residential Clean Energy Credit), not 25C (Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit).

Both credits are claimed using IRS Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credits), but Geothermal heat pumps are claimed under Part I of Form 5695, where the 30% credit has no dollar cap, and it does not require a PIN, QMID, or manufacturer code. Homeowners simply enter qualified costs for the geothermal system and keep their invoice and installation documentation for their records.

Air-source heat pumps and other efficiency upgrades are claimed under Part II of Form 5695, which covers the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (IRC §25C). This is where the PIN or QMID is required, along with efficiency certifications and annual dollar limits.
